Track Review – "Get Busy" by Dyana Cods & Toxic Lyrikali
"Get Busy", a track that dropped on May 1st, 2025, a collaboration between female Munga Dyana Cods and mboka Doba’s Toxic Lyrikali, is another example of the resurgence wave in Kenyan music right now. Dyana Cods hit a new level with her dancehall banger "Set It" featuring AJAY (Buruklynboyz) in 2024 – that track went absolutely viral, blowing up on TikTok, topping charts on Spotify and Apple Music in Kenya, and becoming the most Shazamed tune at the time. The song currently has racked up over 13 million views on YouTube . Well, she teams up with Toxic Lyrikali, the Eastlands storyteller spitting raw fire, with "Chinje", his maiden voyage of a hit song, which dropped in late October 2024, garnering more than 6 million views in 6 months. Now, the Prom King and Queen linked up and the result is pure energy in "Get Busy”
Cods, remember that silky voice on albums like “RiverLake Nilote” before "Set It"? She brings back that same energy but without the naivety of an upcoming artist.
SET IT made Dyana Cods come of age, and now she plays in the big leagues, which is the reason why she is earning the big bucks. Her recent success with "Set It" showed she can really deliver a catchy, danceable Kenyan track with exotic spices like the dancehall flavour. Then you've got Toxic Lyrikali, the guy who paints vivid pictures of Nairobi life in his rhymes, flow always on point. The man brings that streetwise edge to "Get Busy", making the song resonate with the Nairobiness in Nairobi. What's super exciting is seeing artists from different sonic worlds come together and cook up something new and unique; it's Kenyan music on a course of great things.
When these two link up, it's like smooth meets grit in the best way possible, as Dyana Cods' vocals are catchy and smooth on the ears, while Toxic Lyrikali's verses just hit different, our very own Skillibeng. Not to say he is copying, but as they say, imitation is the best form of flattery. Lyrically, "Get Busy" is all about letting go and having a good time, perfect for when you just want to dance and forget everything else, enjoying the feel-good feeling that is our existence with music.
What can I say? The people are feeling it; the video has blown up, racking up almost 700k views on YouTube in 10 days since the publishing of this article. The video itself is a burst of colour and movement, matching the song's energy perfectly, a great job done by the one and only director, Jurist District. He has been pivotal in the visualisation of the Kenyan rap/hiphop scene as witnessed in recent years. It's inspiring to see this generation of Kenyan artists from all disciplines supporting each other and creating timeless music together. Recorded under BigBeats Afrique under the mastery of Ares 66, the professional responsible for most of Dyana Cod’s tracks, it obviously is a well-wrapped project. I mean, the farmer may grow the produce, but it is the chef that determines how good the food will be.
Overall, "Get Busy" got the energy, the expected catchy hook, and the perfect blend of Dyana Cods' proven ability to create a hit and Toxic Lyrikali's undeniable flow, coming fresh off the impact of both successes of the two artists. They may be the current epitome of representation of both genders in the industry right now. This track is definitely going to be on repeat for a while, a solid addition to both their catalogues and a powerful example of the exciting collaborations fuelling the Kenyan music scene. Clearly, as Museveni said, our future is very bright!
